Well, I've sort of come down from my earlier rant. I was actually calming down real good, then had to go get MonkeyBoy from school. I had put new clean (dry) underwear, shorts and shirt on Icebear Jr. It took 3 minutes, tops, to get to the school. When I took him out of the car, he was soaked. Soaked! On top of that it was raining, and I had to carry him 2 blocks. Shit. Oh well.
Anyway, I felt like reviewing a couple of movies that I've seen recently and figured I'd do it now. These are available at your local Crackhustler Video or Hollywood Video, in the new DVD section.
First off is Super Troopers. Super Troopers is a movie distributed by Fox Searchlight, but was put together by an independent group, Broken Lizard. Broken Lizard is a group of 5 guys who formed a comedy group in college, and then, after graduation, all moved to New York and formed Broken Lizard.
From the box:
Captain O'Hagen (Brian Cox) tries in vain to control the imaginations and hormones of his bumbling team of five Vermont Highway Patrolmen. But when the opportunity to solve a real crime rolls their way, the formerly inept SUPER TROOPERS pounce into action to become highway heroes.
Ok, and now in my words. This movie is hilarious! Yeah, it's kind of stupid, but it doesn't take itself too seriously and is a riot. The shenanigans the troopers get up are fuckin' great. For instance, the "cat game". One trooper bets his partner that he can't say "meow" 10 times during a routine traffic stop. Between that, chugging maple syrup, and duking it out now and then with the local police there's not much time left for rounding up criminals. Luckily, there aren't any in Spurbury. It's also great to see Brian Cox in a comedy role. If you don't know who Mr. Cox is, he was in Braveheart with Mel Gibson, played his Uncle Argyle. Most of the time, he's stuck in the serious role, but he's got quite the comedic talent. All in all, this movie is worth a great laugh and I highly recommend you go out and rent it. Also, if you're getting the DVD, watch it again with the comentary, both of them.
The next movie, some of you might have heard of. It's called Showtime and stars Eddie Murphy and Robert DeNiro. I wouldn't have thought that Murphy or DeNiro would have made a movie that went direct to video, but I also haven't had cable for some months so it could have been out in theaters and I wouldn't have known it. Haven't been to one of those for a while either. Anyway, this movie takes on the buddy-cop genre and does a damn good job about it. DeNiro, of course, is the hardnosed, dedicated detective and Murphy is the young, ambitious Patrolman who's real dream is to become an actor. Well, after DeNiro's character, Mitch Preston, shoots the camera out of a cameraman's hands during an undercover bust that's gone bust, the television network threatens to sue the LAPD unless Mitch concedes to let a camera crew follow him around. Of course, since his partner got shot and was wounded, they team him up with Murphy's character Trey "Icetrey" Sellars, who he can't stand and who's always playing up to the camera. This movie is totally funny and well worth the $4 you pay to rent it. Most people don't realize it, but DeNiro is incredibly fuckin' funny and, of course, Eddie Murphy gets quite a few laughs. Another high point in the movie is William Shatner, playing himself, as a "TV Cop consultant" to the two real police.
So, basically, I really liked both of these movies. In fact, when I get paid and we take care of our bills, I'm going to go and buy Super Troopers, I liked it that much.
Anyway, I'm starting to bore myself here, so I figure I'd best quit while I'm ahead. I'll have something more interesting next entry.
Till then.
